Soul & Country Picks: Beyonce Newest Music + More

Jolene by Beyonce*

Dry like a hot summer day in the country with mosquitos. Beyonce and her song writers cover Dolly Patron's 1973 classic "Jolene." They flip the song. Instead of begging Jolene to stay away from her husband, Beyonce's version warns Jolene with threats of violence, which falls on mute ears. This is another song holding a woman accountable for the actions of their unfaithful husband. Irony of Beyonce's version, is its lyrics read like a life experience of both her and her mother, Tina.

Example: She says, "raised his kids for 20 years" But none of Beyonce's children are 20 and she never publicly raised any of Shawn "Jay Z" children.

She says, "I’m still a banjee B-tch from Louisiananne"

But Beyoncé was born and raised in Houston. Her mother Tina Knowles is from Louisiana.

Next, as she pours several "shots" of alcohol into a coffee mug, Beyonce sings "Me and my man crossed those valleys, highs & lows, everything between."

Again, conveying to the 'other' woman that she has an unbreakable relationship with her man. But the irony of this version is another woman imploring or warning other women to stay away from their husband when their husband leave them to go and play and even stay away with other women!

Funny, at one point a man sings along stay away from the happy home. That suggests, the reality of a man torn between another love interest but his inability to escape his current situation to seek divorce. So he plays along with the wife, but will be in the arms of his love interest day and night - Jolene!

This song may resonate with women begging their man to stay home. But in 2024 there are millions of Jolenes they ain't going nowhere. Now flip the Bey  "y" and let's say, Bye Beyonce! Drink the cup of alcohol! Stay drunk in love!

*TEXAS HOLD EM is street, sexy, sultry, sophisticated and sassy! But not country!  But Beyonce delivers!

The best of soul and country, Socha: "Pretty Please" is authentic to the tradition of the country music genre no matter the listener. Lyrically strong, this song delivers on every level. Testament to true art. The song delivers the pain of poverty, bullying, abuse and challenging mental health and struggles of low self esteem.

Miko Marks & the Resurrectors - We Are Here

Miko Marks & the Resurrectors - "We Are Here" is Miko's foot busting soul and country song of 13 years in the making. Chapel Hart: You Can Have Him Jolene

Chapel Hart: "You Can Have Him Jolene" soul and country song is as raw and real as it gets in comparison to traditional country music. Both lyrics and instrumentals are on point! The title speaks for itself. Hart is bad to the bone!

Rissi Palmer: Seeds

Rissi Palmer soul and country song 'Seeds' is by far the greatest and most thought provoking country song in America as it pertains to the truest form of country music genre. Monica Denise soul and country pick is "Letters." True, it's not a traditional country music song. But Monica's lyrics are like Loretta Lynn's, Dolly P, and Shania Twain  style infused with R & B tempo. Long and short, she sings about regret, pain, and lost love.

Julie Williams: Southern Curls

Great music! Strong lyrics! Southern Curls is soul and country. The song journeys the life of biracial children and the inner struggles of identity and self identifying in a world that forces classifications. Deeper, the song also highlights classism and sexism, too.
